I had a nap dream
that I was in a super market with my brother and sister-in-law and I was laying on my back playing the air drums. Only they sounded very real to me, however my brother claimed that no one else could, but that didn't stop him form accurately guessing a song I was playing. I also was craving ham and eating bits of cheese I was getting from a fridge, how I did this while laying on the floor I'm not sure, that may have been leakage from another dream, but I don't think so. This was all at the end of my dream and the first part was a rerun of a Breaking Bad episode. Go figure!

The iPad Identity
It's been a little over a week since the iPad was announced and immediately I knew that something was wrong. This was a device that gadget freaks and mac heads had been anticipating for years and I had been saving for for nearly nine months ( which is much longer than I needed.) The iPads problem, besides the fact that it's not nearly as pretty as it should be, is that it doesn't have a tablet operating system, it has a phone operating system. It runs on the iPhone OS 3.2 which makes it essentially a larger iPhone. Many would have preferred the OS X operating system and I probably would have preferred that as well, but I think the problem lies much deeper than the iPhone OS vs. OS X argument.
With all the time leading up to the release of the "iPad" apple should have made an operating system that fits a tablet computer and not adapted a phone interface. Here is a video of what the iTablet interface should have looked like:
(Thanks Gizmodo)
It's quite brief but shows a system that is meant to be used with your fingers and takes advantage of the larger screen. I have an iPhone and it does everything I need it to, so I don't need another device that does the same things. I need a tablet, something in between a smart phone and a laptop, you know, the sort of device Steve Jobs was talking about right before he showed us the new iPhone Jumbo!
Some more specific quibbles I have are that 1) at this point in time you need to have flash on a tablet, I don't really miss it on my iphone because I accept it's limitations and the screen is small enough to make me forgive such an omission, but HTML 5 is not widespread enough yet to get away with no flash, I want to watch Hulu on my tablet. 2) No multitasking, something I have been dying for my iPhone to do! This REALLY hurts the tablet and proves that it is NOT a computer, computers can multi task and most phones don't. 3) Steve Jobs made preposterous claims that iBooks was an improvement on the kindle. It's not! The back lighting alone makes that a fact, sure the way your books are presented and the cool page turning graphic is neat, but are only gimmicks and wont impress hardcore readers who want to look at a screen reminiscent of a book and not a computer.
I love Apple and will keep buying there products, but I'm not getting a first gen iPad, I'll either wait for apples next line of tablets that have fewer limitations and are more reminiscent of a computer, or I'll just get a courier or whatever tablet gets the closest to being what it should be. I'd love to see Google enter the tablet market since they have a lot of the infrastructure that is necessary already there. Oh and one more gripe with the iPad is the terrible name, sure the iPod might have sounded weird and we got used to it, but you don't use any sort of pod to soak up your period blood! And on that note adue.

Hello!
Lets see, I have seen about 4 new movies lately, and realized I forgot to mention one last time so I suppose I will begin there!
MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3-D ***
This movie is as bad as it looks! This movies downfalls are the usual, awful script with predictable ending, and bad acting. However it makes up for both of these areas with it's 3-D presentation. The film was obviously meant to be view in 3-D since there are many, many things that come popping out of the screen at your face (most notably an eyeball!) I don't know how they will transfer this film to DVD or if they will include 3-D glasses, but if they don't than the movie will loose all of it's good qualities. This movie has to be seen in theaters in all it's 3-D glorry to truely be understood as the gory master peice that it is.
APACOLYPTO ***1/2
I consider this movie a combination between Braveheart and The Passion of the Christ. It's super gory and very thrilling, the plot is mediocre but that doesn't really matter. It's really a feast for the eyes and the adreanal glands! It's the story of a Mesoamerican tribe that is captured as slaves and sacrifices by the Mayans. Lots of decapitations and fatal body piercings!
PARADISE NOW****
Two palestine friends are chosen to be suicide bombers on an attack of israeli soldier. Something goes wrong and they are seperated and one must decide if he is to continue the task alone. This movie taught me alot about the Israeli/Palestine conflict and encouraged me to look deeper into it. Humans no matter who they are see the world from the point of view tha they are right and if you do not agree you must be wrong. There is a filter infront of peoples faces which make us see the world as we want to and not necessarily as it truely is, and some of us believe in what we see through the vail so strongly that we are willing to die inorder to make people see things our way. This story is extremely frightening because of the truths it speaks and it's almost complete understanding of the human condition and what leads people to kill in the name of a cause or a god. Great film!
Coraline 3-D ***1/2
Coraline is freaky! really freaky! It would have made a really good adult horror film but works just as well as a childrens fantasy. The 3-D is alright, but the film was obviously not made with the format specifically in mind. The animation however is absolutley wonderful, I do love stop motion! The story is great and Coreline is cute, probably because she is not all that nice which makes her character quite realistic, and she has blue hair!
The Uninvited ***1/2
The Uninvited is a really good horror film based on a japanese film called "A Tale of Two Sisters." This might be the best J-Horror adaptatin I have seen, it does a good job of being it's own film while only relying on the basic story of the original. The trailers for this movie don't do it justice, but there's no way they could without revealing far too much of the plot, which is often the case with good horror films. Go see it and you wont be dissapointed!
Well that's all for now, untill next time!

FUNNY GAMES (1997)
Funny Games is an Austrian film by Michael Haneke which he remade about 2 years ago in English. In the original version An upper middle class family arrive at their lake house and are soon accosted by two young men who want to play some very sadistic games with them. The film apparently about violence in media and how the audience participates in such violence. Watching the movie you can't help but relate to the family who is being victimised because watching the movie is a lot like being helplessly tortured for almost two hours. I might compare the experience to being repeatedly punched in the face all the while listening to the person doing it making jokes and telling you it is your fault.
However that being said, I am a sadistic person and like it when films repeatedly punch me in the face so I quite enjoyed the film. However I might have enjoyed it more not knowing the outcome beforehand and also not knowing several surprising things that happen throughout the film which were revealed to me in several publications I read about the film beforehand, fuckers. Anyway, this did not detract from my enjoyment of the film, but perhaps enhanced it since I had time to digest some ideas that the movie brings up with are not all that palatable.
This movie is certainly not for everyone, it's much too sadistic for normal people or people who don't have a fetish for Horror films (though it is not necessarily a Horror film.) And it is too intelligent and preachy for fans of Saw and Hostel (both of which this movie is far superior than but about as painful to watch.) So who is this movie for? I would guess intelligent, masochistic, movie snobs, who have over active imaginations. So if that is not you, I would suggest skipping it. But if it is RENT IT!
I saw a couple other movies recently but I'm lazy so I will just give a brief synopsis and out of four star rating.
The Lives of Others****
An amazing film about eastern Germany in (appropriately enough) 1984. A man observes the actions of a writer from the floor above through elaborately concealed wire taps throughout his apartment. It shows how art can move us, show us truth and make us better people. It won the Oscar for best foreign language film and also coincidentally stars the actor who plays the father in Funny Games. RENT IT!
Irreversible ***
A ridiculously graphic movie that travels back in time through a series of events that lead to a wrongful murder for revenge that's catalyst is the rape and beating of a woman. It's good if you have the stomach. RENT AT YOUR OWN PERIL!
Oldboy****
Another movie about revenge. A man is imprisoned in a hotel room for 15 years with no explanation and seeks revenge and answers once he is free. The answers he finds however turn out to suck balls for him. Really good, but again ultra violent. RENT AT YOUR OWN PERIL!
In Theaters
I've Loved you so Long ****
A super sad movie about a woman who emerges from prison and goes to live with her sister who accepts her with open arms. But she can't escape her past as we slowly find out the truth of what she did. SEE IT!
Happy Go Lucky****
A super happy movie about the life of a woman who is ridiculously optimistic. SEE IT!
Funny Games completely defies an obligatory star rating it could either get no stars or four I would give it neither, I have no idea what I would rate it.
Also, the Oscars were announced today and I was a bit disappointed. There was nothing unexpected And I've seen 3 of the 5 films nominated for best picture (and so far I think Slumdog Millionare should win and it probably will.) The most disappointing category however is best foreign film which will probably go to Waltz With Bashir just like the golden globes, either that or The Class. And why wasn't Waltz With Bashir nominated for best animated film? Surly it's better than Bolt and Kung-Fu panda, they should really change the name of the category to best animated children's film, or better yet the award for the Pixar movie that came out this year because Wall-E will surely win bringing Pixars total number of wins to 4 (this will be the awards 8th year in existence!)
Anyway I'm of too watch Tsotsi! TTFN

Blog: An Explination
A while back I started a livejournal page chronicling and reviewing every new film I saw (the word "new" here meaning new to me and not necessarily a new film.) However for some reason I gave up on that blog, probably because I tried to write full length reviews for every movie i saw not an easy task when your a busy student with NextFlix and an affinity for sneaking into movies after the one I paid for has finished. This blog will try to achieve something similar, though it will be much less formal and I will only write as much as I feel necessary, which may only end up being a sentence or two. However I have no doubt that some movies will have me rambling on and on for pages.
Seeing as how any person can, and many people do start movie blogs I do not expect a large audience outside of my friends. However my old blog did attract several readers whom I had never met and I quite frankly don't know how they discovered it. So if I don't know you and you find this blog and read this post, drop me a comment and tell me how you found me! But mainly this blog is for myself to keep track of what I've watched, like, and don't like, and to help with my ever developing writing skills. I will be writing for an audience though and will gladly welcome constructive critisism when it come to my writing.
Well I think that covers most of what I needed to say. In a couple minutes I will post my first blog about some of my favorite movies of 2008. Thanks for reading!
